Say ‘hello’ to Mr. Lynn: The bus ride that connects community

On any given day, students can count on one constant amid the unpredictability of C-1: a bus covered in rubber ducks and a driver waving students on with a smile. The man behind the wheel: Arthur Lynn Collins, but no one calls him that.

“Mr. Lynn,” he smiled, “that’s what I like for the kids to call me. I’d rather have that than Mr. Collins or bus driver.”

Seneca Daydrinkers: ‘Honey, I’m Home,’ indeed

As I round out my time at Clemson, it felt necessary to take the chance to revisit one of The Tiger’s most beloved columns from the past few years and write a coffee shop review.

One of the area’s most popular spots, Daydrinkers, has been consistently popping up in my social media feeds, convincing me to give its Seneca location a shot.

‘It’s horrifying’: Social leaders  call for affordable housing, transportation, shelter for homeless population

Though often unseen or unheard, individuals without housing continue to survive throughout the city, even in the harsh conditions of recent winter weather.

Do your part in building a community of respect

As a University student, I find myself interacting with many different people over the course of a week. There is not a time on campus that I am not surrounded by both students and staff. The interactions that students have with one another, staff and friends all differ, but should they?

Call your mom; turns out empty nest syndrome is real

Moving out of your home and into college is a liberating experience for students. It’s no surprise that many of us look forward to college move-in day months in advance, longing to step out of our parents’ realms of control. However, this strive for independence that students feel is more often than not juxtaposed with the longing for dependency parents experience, causing empty nest syndrome or a phenomenon of similar effects.

Let your youth be a spark, not a barrier

It can be easy for your youth to be an excuse to avoid scary topics and ideas, but civics affects all ages, so caring about what is happening around you is important.

With the stress of class, extracurriculars, working a job or learning at an internship, the last thing many students want to do when they get home is read the news to add another layer of stress to their life. With so many distractions life is throwing our way, it is easy to want to drown out any unneeded distractions or stress. However, paying attention to current events and engaging in civic activities and advocacy is essential, even in your youth.

Open laptop, closed mind

When one looks around any academic building or classroom, you can be sure to see one thing in abundance: laptops. This innovative tool allows students to take notes more efficiently and puts infinite information at their fingertips. However, laptops are being abused in some modern learning settings, creating obstacles to learning.

The Clemson housing epidemic is out of hand

The Clemson student experience is unarguably unique to each student at the University. With abundant clubs, majors, resources and activities, students have the opportunity to experience Clemson University in their own distinct way.

This being said, there are many similarities that Clemson students face together, both for better and worse, as a unifying experience. For example, many students can reminisce about their experiences at a football game or their favorite or least favorite meal at the dining hall. One universal experience that students at Clemson can all relate to is, unfortunately, the perils of finding off-campus housing.

The general outlook on girls’ interests is unacceptable

Growing up, and even still in 2024, there have always been certain niches of culture deemed just for girls or just for boys. The way society typically interacts with these concepts has created an issue beyond simply forcing people to conform to norms; it has also created a culture of hate surrounding the interests of girls within this sphere.

Clemson Music Fest is a beacon of modernity

The most general view of Clemson University is often one of the sporting events, super fans and national championships. While these aspects are a considerable part of Clemson’s identity and the student experience, the University is consistently growing and improving to offer its students the best possible living and learning experience.

The rise of peer influence over pressure

Since childhood, parents, teachers and mentors have all explicitly warned us about the dangers of peer pressure in society. Many choose to laugh it off as a modern myth or an extreme version of reality, something they are likely to never face again. However dated, the idea of peer pressure is not extinct from our society, but rather evolved into something much more influential: peer influence.

There’s room for passion and a paycheck

The job force in America has been experiencing a shift from working a typical 9 to 5, where the only intention is to make a check and go home, to finding a way to implement passion into the workplace.

Welcome to an election year with Gen Z

As we begin a new year, people have taken it upon themselves to claim 2024 to be the “year of” many different attributes. Though some may come to fruition and others may fail to reach expectations, one truth withstands: that 2024 is an election year for the books.

Today’s polarization, a product of lack of effort and respect

America’s No. 1 issue today is its increasing polarization in politics, which, ironically enough, is the only thing all parties can agree upon. No matter who you speak to, classmate, crazy aunt or senator, all parties agree that there is a communication issue at the source of our domestic politics. It’s a scary thought.

This is not your mother’s bachelor’s degree

Education is becoming more and more emphasized as an important part of a person’s journey to success, and as a result, the number of college students and graduates is increasing. Looking at the broader picture, this is a great step towards the future betterment of society. However, for individuals obtaining a bachelor’s degree, this is bad news.

The media’s unrealistic portrayal of the college experience is harming us

For years, various media platforms have been producing content to cater to a broader range of audiences. The media creates content that consistently gains traction by revolving around college life, either satirical or an attempt at a realistic take. However, this portrayal of the college experience is harmful to college students because it is so far gone from reality, causing students to make poor choices, ultimately causing failing mental and physical health.

Danger in the publicization of trials

The American judicial system contains a delicate trial process, and the recent mass publicization of cases complicates how justice is served.

The media recognizes the vulnerability of many court proceedings and the eye-catching details of each case. Historically, this is seen in many widely publicized cases such as The People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson and Casey Anthony v. State.

The infamy of Turning Point USA at Clemson University

Clemson University’s chapter of Turning Point USA has recently been under fire for their affirmative action bake sale held on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023. This, however, is not the organization’s first questionable act and will likely not be its last.

Turning Point USA is a relatively new organization, not only at Clemson University but as a whole, as it was only founded in 2012.

However, amid federal disjunction, local community members have joined together in support of those affected.

The benefits of humanities in a STEM world

The humanities often get a bad reputation, branded as a useless degree in comparison to science, technology, engineering and math-based degrees; however, this is not the case.

Society is always looking for a way to develop into the future, and STEM seems to be the way to do it. Jobs in fields like engineering and computer science are expanding to keep up with the demand for innovation.

The allure of Clemson Football culture

The culture of game day is a prevalent part of the Clemson Experience, but it extends beyond just the student body by drawing in alumni, locals and a national audience with its spirit and energy.

As a student here at Clemson, it is impossible to miss the waves of purple and orange that fill the campus on Saturdays throughout the football season. Each corner turned reveals yet another group of friends and family grilling out, playing games and laughing with one another.

Universities need to reestablish themselves as social impact leaders, not businesses

Universities were established as hubs for knowledge and innovation, and for centuries have been seen as such. Higher education spaces have always been the heart of intellectual and social advancement, focusing not only on streamlining science, technology and business, but also facilitating the sharing of knowledge for societal benefit.

Organizations collaborate to fundraise through Clemson Big Man On Campus

One of Clemson’s largest philanthropic events returned to campus this fall, boasting cross-organizational involvement and record-setting goals. The Pendleton Candy Store is set to open its second location this September in Liberty, South Carolina, following the success of the shop’s first location.

The original location’s success in the heart of downtown Pendleton prompted the new candy shop’s opening. The new location, The Pendleton Candy Company on Commerce Street, will open at 18 S. Commerce Street in Liberty and promises to deliver the same “nostalgic sweetness and friendly service” as its original location.
